3 Human Skills That Recruiters & Employers Are Looking For

We recently read in the HR workplace trends for 2023 report that human skills are the new hard skills.  This kind of finding is music to our ears.  In this article, we explore the top 3 human skills that recruiters are currently looking for and how you can identify whether people possess these skills.

I’m sure most of us have experienced a time when we’ve put time and energy into finding and onboarding a new team member who we’re sure is going to be amazing only to be disheartened when they haven't worked out.  When looking for a new hire, the way we traditionally approach the process is from a ‘head’ first angle.  We write job descriptions listing qualifications needed, desired experience and skills that the ideal candidate needs.  Then we ask candidates to submit resumes answering in kind.  Essentially, when looking for a new hire we default to looking for “hard skills”.  We often don’t get a feel of whether someone will be a ‘good fit’ until the interview and we interact with them outside of bullet points on documents.

Research from Harvard University and Stanford Research Centre found that hard skills, including technical skill and knowledge only make up 15% of career success; the other 85% comes from having well developed, soft skills. At Luminate Leadership we don’t like the term soft skills.  We prefer ‘human skills’ because there is nothing soft about them and they shape how we interact effectively and harmoniously with others.HR workplace trends for 2023 reported that human skills are the new hard skills.

Employers are evaluating soft skills in the hiring process more so than in prior years. They are just as, if not more important than someone's ability to perform a task. Among the top ‘human skills’ employers are looking for are:

growth mindset

Someone with a growth mindset will:

  • Find inspiration in others success rather than be threatened by it
  • Build their abilities rather than avoid challenges
  • Understand that effort is required to build new skills
  • Accept criticism rather than ignoring feedback
  • Persevere in the face of failure
  • Have a desire to learn rather than a desire to look smart
self awareness

Someone with good
Self Awareness will:

  • Easily identify their strengths & areas for improvement
  • See how their behaviour affects others
  • Take responsibility for their actions
  • Seek out and ask for feedback and then take it onboard
effective communication

An effective
communicator will:

  • Explain things simply
  • Adapt their communication style to suit their audience and medium
  • Have good, open body language
  • Be a good listener
  • Not talk over or interrupt others
  • Not rely on assumptions
  • Ask questions and invite others opinions
