The Brief

“At the time, staff numbers were down 10 to 20 per cent due to coronavirus, so we set out to recruit more staff and increased engagement with the existing team.”

Matt Turner, CEO and Founder of The Pedal Group (parent company)

March 2020. COVID-19.
As retailers across the country were closing their doors and canceling stock orders with factories, Australia’s largest bicycle retailer was betting big on an uplift in demand.

BETTER LEARNING

With this rapid growth in the business, 99 Bikes didn't waste any time in creating a Leadership Academy, which quickly became the backbone of their business.

Luminate Leadership was hired to consult, create and deliver 3 key functions in Learning and Development:

Each stage is linked to a label describing its focus, such as 'Inspiring Our Future' and 'Building The Bench.'

Setting aside one day a week over an 8 week period, Luminate’s Cherie Canning, and 99 Bikes Nation Leader Lin Pih, worked together to build a comprehensive Leadership program, named the 99 Bikes Leadership Academy.

In this time they designed and wrote the workshops, equipped with facilitator notes and participant notes, focussing on 7 levels of leadership in the 99 Bikes business.
The workshops were designed to be delivered both face to face, as well as virtually (via Zoom) where lockdowns were imposed in various states of Australia during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 7 levels of Leadership included programs for Leaders at every stage and also developing the future leadership bench, deepening their Leadership capability across the company nationally

The Design

Luminate’s first steps were to have a discovery workshop with program sponsors and relevant leaders to discuss the following concepts.

Through this two-day exploration, Luminate Leadership’s Cherie Canning, in partnership with the CHF Head of People and Culture, Rachael Murphy, created a Leadership Pathway and Program, focussing on enhancing the culture and developing the leadership and employee engagement.

The team completed the following tasks, and agreed on the following structure:

LEADERSHIP FRAMEWORK

Establish a clear Leadership Competency framework.

CLEAR METRICS

Leadership program to be mapped back to the Leadership competency framework, with clear metrics to be used in 360 feedback and employee reviews.

THE WORKSHOPS

The workshops would include topics such as effective communication, coaching, problem solving skills, difficult conversations, emotional intelligence, conflict, managing change, resilience, and self development.

LEADERSHIP FRAMEWORK

Establish a clear Leadership Competency framework.

The Delivery

“Before selecting Luminate, I did talk to a few other companies, and the difference with Luminate was huge.  Cherie asked great questions and quickly understood what my vision was for our Leadership Academy. We embarked on a number of design and collaboration sessions which were extremely productive.

Cherie was open, curious, and listened to everything I needed whilst at the same time having a depth of knowledge and experience and was able to challenge my way of thinking whilst staying true to our company visions and values.”
